Job Description:
The RN Clinical Expanded Role will serve as a service line specialist, focusing on one area of expertise within a specific hospital or care site department. This role is responsible for identifying, coordinating, and evaluating projects and assignments related to their specialty. The RN Clinical Expanded Role provides clinical expertise, consultation, education, and research to their designated area, acting as a change agent by accepting and facilitating change. The incumbent is proactive and assumes a clinical leadership position.

Role Highlights:
- Specialized focus in organ recovery and organ perfusion for transplant procedures
- Serve as a service line specialist for transplant, focusing on the area of expertise of Machine Perfusion and Preservation.
- Travel required between Intermountain locations and out of state as part of the recovery team
- Flight travel via Intermountain Life Flight, including small aircraft transport
- Work alongside multidisciplinary experts in high‑acuity, time‑sensitive environments
- The IHOPP Nurse sets up, prepares, calibrates, potentially cannulates, monitors, observes, tests, and provides medication to the organ and its associated preservation machine (if appropriately trained) based upon test results as appropriate and according to established guidelines and protocols in order to maximize organ health and benefit to the recipient in collaboration with the Recovering Transplant Surgeon.

Schedule:
- Frequent out‑of‑state travel via small aircraft (Intermountain Life Flight)
- On‑call coverage required for nights, weekends, and holidays
- 36–40 scheduled hours per week

Highly Preferred Experience:
Have either of the below:
- 2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience
- 2 years of Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) surgical recovery experience
Essential Functions:
- Provides expertise in specialty areas; participates in clinical programs and policy development; supports standardization of care protocols.
- Educate and mentor nursing staff and other healthcare professionals on best practices and new developments in the specialty area. Uses research to improve nursing practice and develop care standards.
- Represents department on committees and works with healthcare team to coordinate and optimize patient care. Acts as consultant and liaison to healthcare team, patients, families, and community.
- Promote and integrate evidence-based practices into clinical care, staying current with the latest research and advancements in specialty area.
- Directs and coordinates care team; provides or delegates care according to plan and licensure guidelines; manages time, supplies, and resources.
- Promotes nursing profession; integrates legal and ethical standards; practices within scope of licensure, complies with regulatory standards and documentation requirements.
- Uses assessment data and critical thinking to develop individualized care plans; involves patients, families, and team members.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in state of practice.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree will be verified). Registered Nurses (RNs) hired or promoted into this role must obtain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within four years of their hire or promotion date. If there is an existing education agreement, that agreement will take precedence.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers
- Unit specific certification as required
- One year of clinical nursing experience.
- Demonstrated experience in assigned clinical area.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide nursing staff.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). Education must be obtained from an accredited institution (degree will be verified).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required as of the job description’s last update on 4/27/2025. Employees hired or promoted prior to this date will be held to the minimum requirements that were in place at the time of their promotion or hire.
Physical Requirements:
- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
- For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
