POSITION PURPOSE
The Technical Writer is responsible for providing accurate and comprehensive guidance to patients through detailed medical narratives, including Letters of Medical Necessity (LMNs). This role supports organizational excellence, maintains patient confidence, and aligns expectations with realistic outcomes. The Technical Writer works to support successful claim approvals, Home Health Care (HHC) authorizations, patient engagement, and strong stakeholder relationships. A commitment to patient advocacy and quality outcomes defines success in this role.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Draft clear, precise LMNs and other medical and legal documentation to support claims while communicating effectively with patients, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.
Manage a high volume of claims, producing approximately 50 letters per month.
Review patient records to identify additional health concerns and document them in LMNs to help maximize claim approvals and benefits.
Promote patient satisfaction and engagement through timely, accurate, and professional communication.
Collaborate with care teams and stakeholders to ensure all documentation, including LMNs, reflects clinical accuracy and aligns with patient care plans.
Apply technical writing and analytical skills to support prompt and successful claim approvals.
Advocate for patients by ensuring LMNs and supporting documentation reflect all approved conditions and help secure the maximum allowable hours and benefits based on medical necessity.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Biology, Nursing, Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related field is preferred.
2–4 years of experience in a healthcare setting is required, preferably in medical writing, LMN development, patient documentation, or healthcare administration.
Familiarity with healthcare programs and benefits, particularly the Department of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC) program, is preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software is required.
Key competencies include customer focus, advocacy, teamwork, written and verbal communication, problem-solving, adaptability, critical thinking, organization, and empathy.

Responsibilities

  • Create medical and legal documentation with accuracy and a focus on fostering positive relationships with healthcare professionals and other stakeholders.
  • Efficiently manage a high volume of claims on a weekly basis.
  • Provide continuous support by reviewing patient records and identifying additional health issues to maximize benefits.
  • Maintain high standards to build and sustain patient trust.
  • Clearly communicate to ensure that patient expectations are aligned with what is realistically achievable.
  • Apply technical skills to secure prompt and successful claim approvals.
  • Foster patient satisfaction and engagement through effective communication and consistent support.
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Biology, Nursing, Epidemiology, Public Health or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting is required, preferably in coordinating and managing patient documentation, medical writing, medical terminology, or in a healthcare administration role.
  • Familiarity with healthcare programs and benefits, particularly the Department of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC) program, is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software is required.
