Job Summary:

The Corporate Director of Ancillary Services provides system-level leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for ancillary clinical services across the organization, with primary responsibility for Laboratory, Radiology/Imaging, and Respiratory Therapy. The Director partners with hospital and corporate leaders to establish consistent standards, improve quality and patient safety, strengthen regulatory compliance, optimize productivity and expense management, advance service-line performance, and support appropriate use of technology, equipment, and contracted services. The role is designed for an experienced healthcare leader with demonstrated success managing complex ancillary, diagnostic, or therapeutic services. Specialty certification across each area of responsibility is not expected; the Director must be an effective enterprise leader who can lead highly specialized departments in partnership with appropriately qualified local leaders and subject-matter experts.

This position requires regular travel across assigned facilities to assess operations, support local leaders, standardize best practices, and drive system-wide performance improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide corporate leadership and strategic oversight across all affiliated hospitals.
  • Establish system-wide operational standards, performance expectations, policies, and best practices while recognizing facility-specific regulatory and service requirements.
  • Partner with hospital executives and department leaders to improve quality, safety, service, productivity, turnaround times, staffing efficiency, and financial performance.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators across ancillary services, including quality, utilization, turnaround time, productivity, patient experience, critical-result communication, therapy outcomes, service access, and other department-specific measures.
  • Support regulatory readiness and ongoing compliance with applicable federal, state, accreditation, and specialty requirements, including CMS Conditions of Participation, CLIA requirements for laboratory services, and applicable imaging and radiation safety standards.
  • Collaborate with local service line leaders and qualified specialty professionals to ensure clinical and technical decisions remain within appropriate scope, licensure, certification, and medical staff oversight.
  • Identify variation across facilities and lead standardization initiatives that improve reliability, efficiency, quality, and cost effectiveness.
  • Evaluate staffing models, skill mix, productivity standards, on-call coverage, recruitment challenges, and workforce development needs across ancillary departments.
  • Partner with Supply Chain, Finance, IT, Clinical Engineering, Operations and hospital leadership on capital planning, equipment replacement, service contracts, vendor performance, and technology optimization.
  • Support evaluation and implementation of information systems, interfaces, workflow technology, and other digital solutions affecting ancillary services.
  • Review vendors, equipment maintenance, and other outsourced or contracted services for quality, service, utilization, and value.
  • Lead or support performance improvement initiatives and outcomes, patient throughput, result availability, and communication of critical findings.
  • Facilitate collaboration among ancillary services, nursing, medical staff, emergency services, surgery, and other clinical departments to improve patient flow and care coordination.
  • Provide leadership coaching and operational support to facility ancillary leaders; assist with leader onboarding, succession planning, and development of high-performing teams.
  • Support integration, due diligence, operational assessment, and standardization activities for newly acquired or transitioning facilities, as applicable.
  • Travel to affiliated hospitals and facilities to assess operations, support leaders, validate improvement plans, and evaluate performance.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business, clinical laboratory science, radiologic sciences, nursing, or a related healthcare field.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, nursing, or a related field.
  • Professional certification or licensure in a healthcare, laboratory, imaging, quality, or healthcare management specialty is preferred but not required.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of progressive healthcare experience, including at least 5 years of leadership responsibility in hospital operations, ancillary services, diagnostic services, or a related multi-department clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead across multiple clinical, technical, diagnostic, or therapeutic disciplines. Direct leadership experience in one or more ancillary service areas is strongly preferred. Experience spanning multiple areas such as Laboratory, Radiology, Imaging or Respiratory Therapy is desirable but not required.
  • Experience overseeing multiple facilities, departments, or service lines in a health system, corporate, regional, or multi-site environment is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success improving operational performance, quality, regulatory readiness, staffing/productivity, financial performance, and standardization across complex healthcare services.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements affecting hospital ancillary services, with the ability to partner effectively with qualified Laboratory, Radiology/Imaging and Respiratory Therapy, subject-matter experts on specialty-specific requirements.

Licenses/Certificates

  • No single clinical license is required if the candidate otherwise meets the education and leadership experience requirements.
  • Relevant professional licensure or certification (e.g., laboratory, radiology/imaging, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation, nursing, healthcare quality, or healthcare management) is preferred.
  • Specialty certification across all areas of responsibility is not required.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel extensively (up to 50%) across hospital and corporate sites.
  • Strong leadership, communication, analytical, financial, and change-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and lead through collaboration in a matrixed, multi-facility organization.
  • Ability to interpret operational and quality data, identify variation, establish priorities, and drive measurable improvement.
  • Ability to effectively lead highly specialized departments by partnering with appropriately credentialed technical and clinical subject-matter experts.
